Evaluation and Management of Atherogenic Risk in Metabolic Syndrome
Summary
Metabolic syndrome is an opportunity for patients to realize how sedentary lifestyle, less nutritious than desired eating habits and weight gain over time conspire to cause abnormal blood lipids, elevated blood pressure, elevated blood sugars, hypercoagulability and increased inflammation. But most important, it's recognition should begin the process of learning how lifestyle change and improvement in weight and waist can reduce the toll of metabolic risk factors as well as the associated risks of diabetes and coronary heart disease.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this session, the participants will be able to:
- Define the components of the metabolic syndrome.
- Explain to patients the value of metabolic syndrome in not only increasing the risk of coronary heart disease, but also the risk of Type 2 diabetes due to the clustering of risk factors.
- Apply effective lifestyle change to improve all five components of the metabolic syndrome using improved diet and increased physical activity.
- Recognize that only modest amounts of weight loss are required to improve the risk factors of the metabolic syndrome.
